Why the Foundation was formed…
Welcome to the Shane McGee Foundation, founded in 2006 by the McGee family for the purpose of educating and protecting consumers with regards to unsafe, defective products. Robert and Constance McGee, both retired teachers, lost their son in a preventable tragedy. You may read their story and more about their son, Shane, elsewhere on this site. Today, the McGee family wishes to honor their son by holding to the belief that manufacturers should always be mindful of the products they release to the public. No family should lose a member because of a defective product. It is unacceptable and can be prevented by companies that put safety first. Yet everyday in America, people are injured and sometimes killed by the same negligence or misconduct that led to Shane's death. Hence the reason for this website and the formation of the Shane McGee Foundation.
What the Foundation is…
Thirteen years passed between the time of this tragic event and the completion of litigation that won the McGees a large judgment against the manufacturer of the vehicle that caused their son's death. The foundation was formed in 2006 and operates as a self-funded, private organization. It is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit registered in the state of Florida. Its primary purpose is to make America safer for consumers, especially families with children.
Unlike the large, national consumer protection organizations such as Public Citizen and the Consumers Union, the Shane McGee Foundation is a small, focused entity that works to drive change at a local level. They will do so by focusing on activities and communications which further their mission which is to educate and keep consumers safe.
The Shane McGee Foundation is governed by a five-member board of directors--all members of the McGee family. With this organization, the McGee family has embarked on a grassroots effort to keep families, especially those with young children, safe.
