Robert and Constance McGee (Bob and Connie) were just ordinary folks, enjoying their life in South Florida with their three children, Rob, Shane and Kelly. They were devoted school teachers – passionate about their role as educators. They had a nice house in west Broward County, their children were bright and did well in school. As a matter of fact, all was well. Until the day that a tragic car fire took the life of their 13-year-old son, Shane. This was many years ago. Today – Bob and Connie, now retired – are educators on a larger scale, with a vital message for a much bigger audience.
They seek to educate consumers across Florida and the country regarding safety issues. The reason behind this grass-roots effort: the tragic accident during which they and their daughter Kelly suffered very severe burns and injuries, and which also cost them their son. After a long recovery from these injuries, they became fighters, researchers, and champions for the cause of automobile safety – winning a large judgment in court from the manufacturer of the station wagon that caught fire due to a known fuel-tank defect. It was a long, arduous legal process that ultimately lead to the formation of a private organization and a scholarship fund.
Today, the McGee family operates The Shane McGee Foundation in an ongoing effort to continuously memorialize their son, while helping the general public. They labored to create this Foundation, and they – along with the Foundation’s Board members – will be giving their time and work effort for many, many years to come. They are excited to watch the Foundation’s reach and message grow, and to feel the reward of helping others. At times, the McGee family cringed under the publicity surrounding their ordeal and their case. But if just one injury is prevented – maybe even a life saved – by the information the McGees share, then it is worth all the effort. Thank you for caring about – and sharing – the McGee’s story.
